What is middleware?

A software component in a client-server architecture that performs process management. Middleware allows servers to process messages efficiently from a large number of clients. In addition, middleware can allow clients and servers to communicate across heterogeneous platforms. Prominent kinds of database middleware include transaction-processing monitors, message-oriented middleware, and object-request brokers.
