For each table, select at most one clustering index and zero or more nonclustering indexes. In a clustering index, the order of the data records is close to the index order. In a nonclustering index, the order of the data records is unrelated to the index order. Index selection is an important subproblem of physical database design. Index selection usually chooses btree indexes. Other kinds of indexes (hash and bitmap) also can be considered.
