What is GROUPING SETS operator?

An operator in the group by clause that requires explicit specification of column combinations. The grouping sets operator is appropriate when precise control over grouping is required. The sql:2003 standard provides the grouping sets operator as an extension of the group by clause to support multidimensional data.
