Punjab University to establish medical and dental college

According to a press release, issued by the Punjab University (PU), the has announced to establish a state-of-the-art constituent medical and dental college with 150-bedded teaching hospital and a high level preliminary meeting was held at the committee room of VC’s office.

According to the press release, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran presided over the meeting while focal person of the Project Prof Dr Shaukat Ali of Chemical Engineering, senior faculty members, Ex VC KEMU Dr Mumtaz Hassan, Ex Chief Executive Services Hospital Dr Shamim Ahmed, PGMI Professor, Dr Hummayun Iqbal, Principal Lahore Dental College Dr Muhammad Rafiq Chattha, MD PRCMDC Dr Mazhar Ali, Prof of Lahore Medical College Dr Saeed Khokhar, Principal Amina Medical College Dr Zafar Ali Chaudhry, Principal Sialkot Medical College Dr Khaleel ur Rehman, CEO Institute of Child Health Dr Tahir Masood, ENT Prof Dr Nasrullah Rana, Prof Dr Sabir Hussain of Army Medical College, Principal Pakistan Red Crescent Dental College Dr Tanveer Ahmad Khan, Dr Saeed ul Haq, Dr Latif Malik, Dr Muhammad Ashfaq and Dr Taimor Latif Malik attended the meeting.

Focal Person Prof Dr Shaukat Ali narrated the project and initial plans to the participants and said that 100 MBBS students and 50 dental students would be the capacity of the college. He said that the fee structure of the college would be within the reach of middle class. Five stupendous features of the college, he said, were that research in medical education would be an integral part of the college similar to Agha Khan Medical University College. He said that the university had adequate equipment as well as allied facilities for research work as Hepatitis test was being conducted at CAMB. He said that expertise of the highest order would be available and 15 eminent medical doctors would guide all through the stages up to the completion of the college and thereafter. He said that faculty members of the college would also be sent abroad for higher education at appropriate time. He said that advisory counsel comprising highly qualified renowned senior medical doctors would be approached to provide training to faculty of the college commensurate with the level of foreign training. He said that a 160-bedded teaching hospital of the college would contain a section which would oversee the pharmacy so that no harm accrues to the patients due to substandard medicines. In this regard, an MoU would be sign with a hospital for using additional 350 beds according to PMDC criteria. He said that residential colony for faculty of the college would also be constructed.

The participants of the meeting congratulated the brainchild of PU VC Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran to establish a medical and dental college which would be within the reach of a common man. They gave their precious suggestion for establishing state-of-the-art medical college. It is pertinent to mention here that senior medical professors who have attended the meeting are offering their honorary services for the establishment of medical college.
