According to a notification, issued by the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Dr. Kamran Haider, Faculty, Department of Biology and Prof. Sohail Qureshi, Dean, Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE) have been awarded a research grant of PKR 4.1 Million by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) for a project titled “An integrated computational-experimental study of HCV (genotype 3a) sequence heterogeneity, protein-drug interactions and immune response.”
Under the leadership of Prof. Qureshi and Dr. Haider, the HCV research at Department of Biology is being developed into a comprehensive program of capacity building and high quality research. The studies are aimed at addressing some of the most challenging questions in HCV therapy such as what is the molecular basis of resistance and what drug design strategies can overcome this? Can we map the mutational landscape accessed by the deadly virus in Pakistani population? What is the impact of variations on drug response and immunity? What are the prospects and promising directions for more effective and perhaps tailor-made therapeutic intervention for our population? With an international publication recently out and one in the pipeline, the project is set to generate knowledge relevant to basic science and clinic. The award of this grant will place the investigators in perfect position to continue their endeavors.
