LUMS - Session on Emergency Medicine

According to a notification, issued by the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Dr. Maimoona Khan, a resident at Baylor College of Medicine, conducted a session on emergency medicine at LUMS exclusively for the members of LUMS Emergency Medical Services (EMS) on Saturday, 26 January 2013. The session started off with a lecture on primary vital signs; students were taught how to recognize warning signs based on their assessment of a patient’s vitals. References were made to the medical conditions that frequently occur on campus, namely asthma, diarrhea and fainting; and trainees were taught how to assess transport need.

The lecture was followed by a workshop on stitches. The workshop began with Dr. Maimoona explaining the per-requisites to stitching which involve examining the cut in order to choose the right needle size, the thread type, the stitch type; and giving local anesthesia. An introduction was made to the basic tools used in stitching and the risks involved with the procedure. Thereafter, a demonstration was made on chicken pieces followed by a practice session.
