LUMS - NEWT-Lab hosts Pakistan ICTD 2013

According to a notification, issued by the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), the Pakistan-Information and Communication Technologies for Development (ICTD) 2013 Workshop was organised by the LUMS SBASSE Neighborhood for "Emerging-World" Technologies (NEWT) Lab on January 15 and 16, 2013. This is the first time that a workshop of this kind has been held at LUMS and Pakistan.

The Newt Lab staff was able to bring together ICT4D and HCI4D researchers from internationally renowned research institutes and world class universities such as the University of Washington, University of California-Berkeley, New York University, Microsoft Research and IBM Research. Also in attendance were national and international ICT4D practitioners; representatives from NGOs and social entrepreneurs in Pakistan and South Asia such as Akhuwat Foundation, the World Bank, UK-Aid and Punjab IT Board; professors and students from Pakistan’s technical universities and government representatives.

The keynote speakers at the workshop included LUMS VC, Dr. Adil Najam, Dr. Amjad Saqib, Akhuwat Foundation, Dr. Muhammad Tayyab, World Health Organization, Dr. Umar Saif, Punjab IT Board and LUMS Faculty and Zubair Bhatti, The World Bank. The objective of the workshop was to bring researchers, practitioners, NGOs and government officials under the same roof and forge long-term collaborations between them to find solutions for the problems in the domain of education, healthcare, accessibility, and citizen engagement in the developing world. The workshop comprised talks, panel discussions and demos.
