According to a notification, issued by the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), the leading national and international experts gathered at the university on January 30, 2013, for two back-to-back symposia on emerging innovations in higher education and on entrepreneurship and economic development. The symposia were held as part of the 12th meeting of the Advisory Board of the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE).
The morning symposium, titled “Excellence in Education” brought leading national and international perspectives on cutting edge developments and innovations in Higher Education, particularly pertaining to the use of technology in higher education. The session was chaired by Dr. Mansoor Sarwar, the Principal of the Punjab University Centre for Information Technology (PUCIT).
Dr. Sidney Burrus, former Dean of the Rice University School of Engineering and member of the SBASSE Advisory Board, talked about how fundamental developments are changing the face of higher education, especially in the form of the Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC). Dr. Sohail Naqvi, the former Executive Director of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) spoke about the need to re-evaluate college education in Pakistan and especially focus on skills and accreditation. Dr. Naveed Malik, former Rector of the Virtual University (VU) in Pakistan, presented on the frameworks and evolution of VU over the years and highlighted the potential and scale of distance education in Pakistan. The final speaker was Dr. R. Stephen Berry of the University of Chicago and member of the SBASSE Advisory Board, who discussed lessons in teaching of science, especially for non-science students. The presentations were followed by a panel discussion with the four presenters who were joined by Dr. Adil Najam, Vice Chancellor of LUMS, and Dr. Sohail Qureshi, Dean SBASSE.
