According to a notification, issued by the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), the Epigenetics Research Lab at the LUMS Department of Biology recently published about the existence of prion-like domains in Drosophila GAGA factor in the BMC Genomics Journal. In fruit flies, protein encoded by gene called Trithorax-like (Trl) is called GAGA factor (GAF) which is a very versatile constituent of the gene expression system. Existence of glutamine rich (poly Q) regions in fruit fly GAF prompted the team led by Dr. Muhammad Tariq, Associate Professor at the Department of Biology to explore if GAF poly Q regions may behave as prion-like modules because poly Q rich regions are known hallmarks of prions in yeast. Prion is a word used to describe a misfolded protein which behaves as an infectious agent by sequestering properly folded, fully functional protein of its own type and such infectious agents are responsible for BSE, scrapie and certain other degenerative diseases of the nervous system.
